Our increasingly polarized societies tend to exacerbate differences. Today, it has become common to pit two concepts against each other using semantic shortcuts. The way victory and defeat are presented—too often reduced to a simplistic opposition between winners and losers—is the most telling example of this, lacking any nuance. It is not a matter of questioning results, but of rebalancing the values we associate with them, as several of our guests attest in this feature dedicated to the place of women in sports. The cult of performance and the competitive spirit form fertile ground for mental health struggles.
