Bra shopping can feel intimidating. Like swimsuit shopping, or shopping for jeans, where choices in size, color, and shape feel endless, you are left asking yourself - Where do I even start? An in-person fitting with an expert is always helpful, but it isn’t always possible. By evaluating how your current bras fit, good or bad, you can decide where to go next. Have you been getting it right all along (maybe!)… or is it time to start from square one (likely, like the rest of us!). To get started, put on your favorite bra and use the simple steps below to decide what fits and what doesn’t, what should go into the keep pile, and what has seen better days, for a fresh start in your bra drawer.

To see if your bra is fitting properly, check:

  1. THE STRAP - Should sit straight and flat. There should be some tension with the ability to run a finger under comfortably. They should not be falling off the shoulders.

  2. THE CUP - Should lie flat against the body. There should be no gapping or digging at the top, no spillage over the top, sides, or underarms.

  3. THE BAND - Should lie straight and low across the back. Should fit snugly, with the ability to fit a finger underneath. The band is too big if it is riding up in the back.

  4. THE UNDERWIRE - Should envelope and not rest on breast tissue. The center gore (center panel between the two cups) should be flush with the breast bone.

Adjust your size based on your current bra fit:

  • Does the top of the bra cut in? Does the U/W dig in at the side? Are you “spilling out”?

You likely need to go up in the cup.

  • Are the straps digging into your shoulders? Is the band riding up? Are the straps falling off your shoulders?

You likely need to go down in the band and up in the cup.

  • Is the band uncomfortably tight, but the cup looks right?

You likely need to go up in the band and down in the cup.

  • Does the cup wrinkle and gap, but the band feels right?

You likely need to go down in the cup.
